Setting up a ZVOX SoundBase – Don Lindich&039s Sound Advice

I often get emails from readers who are interested in buying a zvox soundbase, but are hesitant because they’re intimidated by the idea of ​​setting it up. this is usually followed by a question about who they can hire to set it up for them.

if you can hook up a toaster, you can set up a zvox soundbase. this page will show you how easy it is. all you need to do is make two easy connections and press a few buttons.

what you need

The sound base includes all the connections you need. no need to buy anything else.

Step 1: Place the TV on the SoundBase soundbase

First, put the TV on the sound base. pretty easy.

Step 2: Connect the optical cable to the TV

You will see the optical cable in the box with the sound base accessories. this is what it looks like.

As you can see in the image above, the connector is shaped so it only fits one way. you remove the protective cap before inserting the cable.

you probably already have hdmi cables connected to the tv. These cables carry the image and sound. in this case, a cable box and a blu-ray player are connected. this is as it should be, and nothing changes here.

Look for the optical digital output connection on the back of the TV. you can see how it looks in the image above.

connect one end of the optical cable to this connection. it will click firmly into place.

step 3: connect the optical cable to the sound base

Locate the optical digital input on the back of the sound base. you can see it in the image above.

Connect the other end of the optical cable to this input, as shown above. it will click firmly into place.

step 4: connect the sound base

pretty easy!

Step 5: Lower the volume on the TV speakers

Turn the volume of your TV speakers down to zero. you want the sound base to produce all the sound.

step 6: use the remote control

turn on the sound base, then select the input using the remote control or the buttons on the front. it is input 1. when it reaches input 1, the sound base will start playing sound.

Use the zvox remote to control the sound and the cable/satellite remote or TV remote to control everything else. you can play around with the different surround sound and accuvoice settings to get the sound you want. all you have to do is press the buttons.

optional steps

It might be easier for you to just use two remotes, and in fact, this is my preference. I set the sound where I need it to be, leave the audio remote and just use my record player or satellite dish remote from then on. however, these additional steps may enhance your enjoyment of the system.

Go to your TV’s audio setup menus and turn off the TV’s speakers.

then, following the instructions that came with the sound base, program the sound base to read your TV’s volume controls. then just use one remote to change channels and volume. control of surround modes will still require the use of the zvox remote.
