Most commercially available winches today are powered by electricity. Other winches are hydraulically powered but are primarily used in recreational settings. Winches consume a lot of electricity. when properly wired, there will be a powerful connection to the winch via a car battery or any other battery that can only power the winch.

This type of winch is recommended for medium to heavy duty jobs and also for frequent jobs. this method requires a vehicle auxiliary battery with a cold crack of 441 to 661 amps and a 60 amp alternator.
- The auxiliary battery must be wired in parallel with the vehicle battery. again, the combined output of the batteries should add up to 12v.
- make sure to mount the battery isolator between the vehicle battery and the backup battery.
- the connection to make sure that the winch get power from the backup battery only to prevent the main car battery from discharging when the winch is still in progress.
- make sure the positive terminal of the power cable is connected to the positive terminal of the car battery terminal.
- make sure the isolator operation is done from the ignition circuit.

trailer mounted winch wiring
A trailer mounted winch can be wired using two methods. these methods are discussed below.
Wiring the winch with a trailer and wiring kit:
recommended for light to medium duty winching frequently. the required vehicle battery must have a cold rating of 440 amps and a 60 amp alternator. on the winch, quick disconnects are used to ensure easy connections between the trailer mounted winch and the vehicle battery power source.
- at the end of the long power cable and the short ground cable, find a place to install the quick disconnect on the side of the vehicle.
- find a clean metal surface on the vehicle frame to ground the short wire from the disconnect.
- operate the long power from the quick disconnect to the vehicle battery on the engine.
- make sure the wires are not bent , so avoid hot areas.
- connect the positive cable from the rear of the vehicle to the positive post on the car battery.
- ground the battery to a clean metal surface on the vehicle frame. using a short wire with eyelets at both ends. the short cable should be separate from the other cables you are using.
- connect the trailer side quick disconnect cable to the winch.
- connect the positive cable to the positive winch post
- connect the ground cable to the negative ground post of the winch.
- connect opposite ends of the cables. a quick disconnect on the trailer must connect to the quick disconnect on the side of the vehicle.
Wiring winch to trailer mounted auxiliary battery:
It is approved for use with regular and heavy-duty winches. It is supposed to be used on a vehicle with a 441 amp cold start and a 60 amp alternator. for a winch to receive power, you do not have to hitch the trailer to the vehicle. instead, a separate battery is used to ensure that the vehicle’s battery does not run out before using the operation.
- Install the trailer battery in a safe place at the front of the trailer. Safe battery placement ensures that the battery is protected and thus extends battery life. it is recommended to place the battery inside a tool box.
- connect the power cable and the ground cable to the right winch post.
- connect the positive cable and the ground cable ground to the trailer mounted battery.
- connect the positive cable to the positive post of the battery and the negative cable to the negative post of the storm surge.
- charge the battery regularly to ensure that the position is maintained. charging will be maintained on a 12v circuit when additional wiring is present. the trailer connector on the circuit draws power from the vehicle’s battery.
- once the connection is made between the 12v accessory circuit and the seven-way trailer, power is supplied. then connect the 12 gauge wire to the trailer side connector.
- make sure there is a good connection between the trailer end and ground to the trailer flame.
- do the following ground the trailer battery and trailer frame with 12 gauge wire.
- place the ring terminal on both ends of the wire.
- On the trailer-mounted battery, connect one end of the ground cable to the negative post.
- Connect the remaining portion to a clean metal surface on the vehicle frame using a self-tapping screw.
- 12 volt cable will hold the trailer mounted battery charge when the vehicle is running while connecting the trailer and car.
