help: my vmware internet is not working
We have discussed the problem of hyper-v vm without internet in a previous article. in fact, you may also encounter this situation in vmware: when you open internet explorer in a virtual machine, it can’t display the web page, or an x is displayed over the network connection icon, which means your vmware virtual machine is offline to the internet.
Why is this problem occurring and how can you fix it?

why vmware internet is not working (possible causes)
there are many reasons why vmware internet connection is not working, for example:
- Firewall is blocking access to the internet.
- Virtual machine does not have an ip address.
- Bridge, host-only, or national network connection failed.
- the ethernet controller driver is not installed.
Because it’s hard to specify what causes network problems in the first place, it’s best to check each item one by one. Below I will demonstrate how to connect a virtual machine to the internet in vmware correctly and show the process on the vmware workstation as an example.
how to fix vmware internet not working (troubleshooting)
◆ If your vmware internet connection is not working, first of all restart the virtual machine. shut down the virtual machine and reboot the host. after that, reopen the virtual machine. If you still don’t have internet access, please troubleshoot as follows. ◆ after operating each step, check if the virtual machine has internet access. once the problem is solved, it is not necessary to continue with the later steps.
Step 1. Verify that the vmware host has a good network connection.
▸ click “start” >> “control panel” >> “network connections”.
▸ right click on the local area network connection and select “enable”.
Step 2. Verify that the virtual machine’s firewall is not blocking access to the internet.

Step 3. Check the antivirus program.
verify that the virtual machine’s antivirus program is not blocking access to the internet, and run an antivirus scan to make sure no viruses or other malware are interfering with the internet connection.
step 4. enable the network adapter in vmware.
The problem that the internet is not working can be caused by the vmware network adapter not being connected. if so, enable it.
▸ open control panel. in the wizard, select “network and internet”.
▸select “network and sharing center” >> “change adapter settings”.
▸ select your vmware network adapter and “enable this network device”.
Step 5. Change the network adapter from nat to bridged or (or vice versa).
if one of the options is valid and the other is not, it is a network connection error rather than a workstation or virtual machine problem.
Step 6. Remove the network adapter and add it back.
this is to make sure the network adapter is connected to the virtual machine. follow the steps:
▸ first shutdown your virtual machine.
▸ click “vm” >> “settings” >> “network adapter”.
▸ Make sure the network adapter is in the “connect” and “connect at power on” status.
▸ confirm the network connection as “natural or bridged” instead of “host only”.
▸ select “delete”.
▸ then go to backup to “settings” >> “add” >> “network adapter” to add a new network adapter that matches the old one.
▸ restart vmware host and power on the virtual machine to check if the internet is working on the workstation.
step 7. update windows network adapter in device manager.
▸ power on the vmware virtual machine.
▸ click “start”, right click “my computer” >> “manager” >> “device manager”.
▸ click the arrow to expand the “network adapters” section.
▸ right click on your intel(r) ethernet connection in the drop down list (name may vary) and click “update driver software”. select “search automatically for updated driver software”. or if the drive is not automatically detected, select “browse my computer for the drive software” >> “let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.”
for windows xp, select vmware accelerated amd pcnet adapter. for windows vista and 7, select intel pro/1000 mt network connection.
then click “close” and reboot your machine.
step 8. uninstall and reinstall all network adapters in device manager.
▸ start the virtual machine.
▸ click “start”, right click “my computer”>> “manager” >> “device manager”.
▸ click the arrow to expand the “network adapters” section.
▸ right click on the device “intel(r) pro/1000 mt network connection” (on windows vista and 7) or “vmware accelerated amd pcnet adapter” (on windows xp) and select “uninstall” .
▸ in the menu, click “action” >> “check for hardware changes”.
▸ restart the windows virtual machine.
step 9. reset tcp/ip and winsock settings to default.
step 10. uninstall vmware tools, then reinstall it.

example: connect the vmware workstation to the internet
Here, I will illustrate a case to solve vmware workstation internet problem.
1. open vmware workstation, select “edit” >> “virtual network editor”.
2. in the opened wizard, configure all network adapters as mentioned before.
for example, change bridged or nat. in the “bridge to” option, select the correct nic card used by the vmware workstation, or select “restore defaults”. then click “accept”.
This does not require you to re-download the vmware workstation, reducing the risk of data loss.
3. If your workstation’s internet is still not working, go check dhcp and nat service.
▸ type services.msc to open the services manager.
▸ select “vmware dhcp and nat service” and select “reboot”.
✎tip: If you did not enable the automatic feature, select the “properties” menu item to open the vmware nat/dhpc service properties dialog, change the startup type from manual to ” automatic”. ”, so the service will start automatically without the need to manually enable it on your host computer.
After performing these troubleshooting steps, you can successfully connect your virtual machine to the internet. network crashes or outages create inconvenience for businesses and also increase the risk of data loss. For businesses, data loss equates to financial damage, which is undoubtedly a fatal blow. therefore, backup is a good habit that provides insurance for your company and your virtual machine data.

Virtual machines, just like physical machines, can suffer from various errors and problems in actual use. If your vmware vms carries important data or important business, backing it up regularly is absolutely necessary.
However, on the premise that a snapshot cannot replace a backup, we can usually achieve virtual machine protection using some workarounds. you can clone or export virtual machines, for example, but all must be done manually and are not suitable for batch operations.
By comparison, a third-party tool is more efficient and convenient to protect multiple enterprise virtual machines. Here I will introduce the free vmware backup software – Aomei Cyber Backup as an example. you can automate backups process and restore entire virtual machines from any point. Also, the operation is simplified in 3 steps: you can create a vmware backup task for multiple virtual machines at once with several clicks.
download the free edition to experience all the conveniences:
3 easy steps to create a vmware vm backup plan
1. Login to aomei cyber backup web client and add your vmware esxi device.
2. click backup task >> create new task. select vmware esxi backup and the virtual machines you want to backup.
◆ In the destination window, select a location to store virtual machine files.
◆ In the schedule window, you can choose the backup method (full/incremental/differential backup) and set the frequency (daily/weekly/monthly).
◆ In the Backup Cleanup* window (optional feature that requires a premium edition), specify the retention policy for each backup to remove unwanted files automatically.
3. click start backup to create and run the task. then you can check its status in the backup task tab.
After the backup is complete and when you want to recover the vms, just click the task to choose restore. then you can restore the virtual machine from any point quickly and easily.
✎if the restore failed, or you want to make a clone of the virtual machine on the same or another datastore/host, you can also upgrade to the premium edition to enjoy advanced restore to a new location function.
