chromebook is a lightweight device that takes up little space. But when I’m at my desk using professional applications like Photoshop, Microsoft Office, or Visual Studio Code, I rarely use a Chromebook at all. but with these third-party apps on hand, I can use the chromebook as a second monitor for my main computer. thus helping my workflow and productivity with a dual monitor setup without the need to purchase an additional monitor.

are you in a similar position and want to take advantage of the real space of your chromebook screen when working on windows, mac or linux? These are the best apps (paid and free) to help you use Chromebook as a second monitor.

1. duet display

Of all the apps tested, Duo Screen stood out for its seamless and reliable connection between devices. it is a paid application that has a one-time cost of $9.99. It’s worth it, you just have to buy the app on the chromebook, while the windows and mac clients are free as long as you’re a paid customer. Google sometimes offers Duo View as an added benefit to buying a Chromebook. so check if the offer is eligible in the explore app on chromebook before you buy.

download duat display app from play store on chromebook. Also, please download the windows or mac client and install it on the system. Click on your profile and check the box next to screen sharing enabled.

open the duo screen on chromebook and select android in the left sidebar. then select the air option. Although the Duet Display supports a wired connection, it will not work with a Chromebook.

unlike duet display, splashtop is a free app and you need a usb cable to connect two devices. there is no way to connect wirelessly. splashtop is on par with duo screen, if not better, when it comes to reliability and lag between devices. except for the fact that it only supports wired connections, it has all the other features.

download splashtop on chromebook and also install desktop client on mac or windows. now connect both devices with a usb cable and launch the app on both devices.

once this is done, on windows, simply press win+p and select the extend screens option. this will start mirroring your windows desktop to your chromebook. but we want to use chromebook as secondary display. To do this, select the advanced tab on the desktop and uncheck the enable mirror mode option. this will stop screen mirroring and start using the chromebook screen as a secondary display.

then connect via cable or wirelessly. now when you open the app on chromebook it should find all the devices that are connected and have the app installed. just select a device to connect.

spacedesk works very well and has many connectivity options, but when connected wirelessly, you will experience lag and stutter from time to time. if you want to go wireless, the duo screen still has the crown.

  • free

  • wireless connectivity can be a bit buggy and unusable

4. desktop

all the above applications work only with windows and mac. If you’re a Linux user, here’s an open source app that can help you use your Chromebook as a second screen. It connects wirelessly and has many functions, such as app view sharing, screen mirroring, teleprompter mode, etc.

deskreen does not have a separate app for chromebooks. simply download it to your windows, mac and linux desktop and complete the setup process. then connect both devices to the same wi-fi.

in the desktop app on the desktop, you will find a qr code. just scan that qr code with any qr code scanner app on your chromebook. will show you a link to the website. open the link and the second desktop screen will be displayed on your chromebook screen. click the full screen button to use the chromebook as a secondary monitor in full screen mode.

Because it is an open source alternative, it is also free. but the app can feel a bit slow at times and occasional stutters are quite common.

  • works with windows, mac and also linux
  • free and open source software.

  • can only connect wirelessly
  • may lag sometimes

one stone, two birds

the duo showcase is what you need if you’re willing to pay a one-time payment of $9.99. it’s wireless, works fast, and is easy to set up. if not, spacedesk and splashtop can do the job for free. if you are a linux user then your best option is deskreen which is open source, free and works on all platforms. don’t have a chromebook? you can also use your android phone as a second monitor.
