why not use remote desktop applications like teamviewer?

Although you can also access your router with apps like teamviewer, you should keep your computer on at home all the time. this is not practical if you are away from home for more than a couple of days. but routers are always on, whether you’re home or not. and on top of that, you don’t have to install any additional software. all you need is a web browser and you can access your router from anywhere in the world. let’s see how it works.

when you want to access your router from within the network; all you have to do is type the ip address of the router in the web browser. similarly, to access your router from outside, you need to type your public ip address followed by the remote control port number i.e. 8080. so if your public ip address is 74.12.168.14, you will need to type 74.12.168.14: 8080 in the web browser.

but there are two problems here

1. As part of the security measure, all routers have this remote management feature disabled by default. therefore, you must manually enable it on the router.

2. Most home users are assigned a dynamic IP address, which means that every time you reboot your router, your public IP changes. therefore we need to find a way to avoid the dynamic ip address issue. and for this we will use dynamic dns services such as dyn dns or noip.

Because each router is different, the steps to enable remote management and configure dynamic dns will be slightly different for each router. however, the basic principle remains the same. in this article i will show you this on netgear nighthawk r7000 with dd-wrt custom firmware. let’s be

how to access the router remotely

part 1: turn on remote sharing

turning on remote sharing on your router is easy. all you need to do is type the router ip or default gateway address in the web browser. then enter your username and password. now, once you are in the web portal of the router, look for the option remote management. some routers called it remote access and it is usually found in aadvanced settings.

Since you are sharing your router’s web portal remotely, it is a good security practice to change your default port number. from 8080 to something else. Also, make sure you don’t use the default login credentials. change it to something complex, otherwise anyone can log into your network with a brute force attack.

part 2: configure dynamic dns

since most of us have a dynamic public ip address, it will change in the next few days. so let’s fix it by configuring dynamic dns. but before that you need to understand what dynamic dns or ddns really is.

Let’s take this analogy. If I change my mailing address frequently, I will not receive my letters on time. Right? So instead of giving everyone my address, I’m going to give you my friend’s home address. now my friend will get all my mail and i will keep him updated with my latest address. so, now he can forward mail to me easily.

so this dynamic dns is similar to a friend in the middle. when you sign up for their service you need to bind your dynamic public ip to a domain name. and you can use that fixed domain name instead of your public ip. and they will do the work of updating your ip address in the background.

There are now many dynamic dns providers. some free, some paid. The best way to find out which service to choose is to check which service your router supports, so follow these steps.

1. log in to your router and look for an option that says dynamic dns.

if it’s not there, you can download ip update software from any dynamic dns provider. and put it on the computer that is used frequently. but, almost all routers (even the cheapest ones) have these dynamic dns options built in, so you don’t have to worry about that.

I have a custom rom called dd-wrt installed on my netgear router. it is compatible with ddns and without ip. now since the first pays for itself. I will go with the second, that is, without ip. and looking at the interface, I can tell that all I need is a domain name and username/password.

2. so go to noip.com and create a free account.

3. then go to the control panel, there you will find an option to add a hostname. click on that. a new window will open, type in a new subdomain of your choice and click add.

4. now, copy your new domain name and paste it into your router settings, also enter your username and password that you used to log in to that service. and save the changes.

5. Now, to access your home router from a remote location, type your domain name followed by the remote port number. for example: techwiser.ddns.net:8080. if your settings are correct, you will see your router’s login screen.
