on the same local network

to open the plex web application from a different device than the server computer while still on the same network:

  1. open a browser window
  2. type http://server.local.ip.address:32400/web in the address bar (for example, “http://192.168. 1.5:32400/ web”)
  3. the browser will connect to the server and load the plex web application

on a different network

If you’re on a different network than the server computer, you’ll need to set up an ssh tunnel first so you can access things as if they were local. this is only required for initial setup. after the initial setup, you should be able to login using the network ip address as usual.

os x or linux

  1. open a terminal window or your command prompt
  2. enter the following command (substituting your server’s ip address as appropriate): ssh ip.address.of.server -l 8888 :localhost :32400
  3. open a browser window
  4. type http://localhost:8888/web in the address bar
  5. the browser will connect to the server as if it was local and loaded the plex web application

windows

if you are running windows on your local system and your server is on linux or os x, you will need to use an application like putty which can create the ssh tunnel for you. you can use instructions like these to set up the putty/ssh connection. if you follow that, you would use this information:

  • gateway: server.ip.address
  • source port: 8888
  • target: localhost:32400

once you have configured the ssh tunnel:

  1. open a browser window
  2. type http://localhost:8888/web in the address bar
  3. the browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load the plex web app
