The launch of swtor on arguably the most popular gaming platform, steam, means a huge influx of new players. and bioware’s nine-year-old mmorpg can benefit greatly from that momentum right now.

If you’re someone who’s never played the game before, welcome to vulkk.com, your home for all things swtor! if you’re a veteran of the game, but want to learn what the steam version of swtor has to offer, stick around!

In this guide I will go over all possible elements of why you should install swtor on steam, what benefits you will get, how to fully enjoy this game (sub vs f2p) and what happens to your account if you already play swtor, but I want to move on to steam.

Let’s get to it!

what is steam and why is swtor now?

steam is probably the biggest and most popular gaming platform today. offers lots and lots of small and large games of all kinds.

swtor has been around for nine years. The mmo was released on December 21, 2011. It is a PC exclusive mmorpg.

Nine years later, as part of ea’s initiative to put several of its titles on steam, swtor finds its way too. good move, hey! in this way, these games will reach an even wider audience. swtor needs that boost.

steam is more than a market for video game titles. allows players to communicate with each other outside of game environments.

Many of the titles also come with a bundle of additional and optional perks, such as trading cards, emoticons, steam-specific achievements, and more.

swtor offers all of the above and I have a detailed breakdown and overview of all the extra features and purchases you can make, as well as all the extra bonuses you can earn.

if you’re here, chances are you know what steam is and want to know why you should play swtor on it. Unless you’re actively using Steam for your other aspects besides just launching your games, you may not find the bonuses that SWTOR has to offer you that much of an issue.

You can check out the quick review I wrote for swtor on steam. try to inspire new players to try the game as it has a lot to offer but also mention some of the flaws that the game carries on its shoulders.

how to subscribe to swtor and should

To play swtor you don’t need a monthly subscription. but you can get one anyway if you can afford it, want to support the developers, and want to unlock the premium features.

Based on your local currency, it may differ slightly, but the general price is approximately $15 for 30 days of premium player game time.

There are various subscription packages available from places like amazon, kinguin and origin, which will allow you to buy your subscription a little cheaper and/or with special gifts, depending on where you buy from.

The benefits of being a swtor subscriber are considerable, although the game offers many of its classic game mechanics, features and content for free.

bioware continues to make changes to the financial model of the game almost every year. in 2019, two other expansions were free, allowing you to level up to 65 without having to subscribe.

The final game and certain quality of life or game enhancement features remain locked behind the paywall of a monthly subscription.

If you decide to play swtor on steam, you have the option to purchase your subscription directly from the steam client. the classic option of visiting swtor.com is still viable as well. note: there are currently ongoing issues with subscriptions. If your status doesn’t change right away, I suggest you contact bioware customer support.

the pricing models do not differ at all. the amount you would pay if you bought your subscription on swtor.com is exactly the same as if you bought it on steam.

  • 30 days subscription time – €12.99
  • 60 days subscription time – €26.99
  • 90 days subscription time – 35 €.97
  • 180 days subscription time- €65.94

You can get a one-month, three-month, or half-year subscription in one purchase. all of these are recurring, meaning they will renew once your time expires and you haven’t opted out.

You can purchase a 60-day non-recurring game time card on steam, which at the time of this publication sells for the standard price of €26.99.

swtor’s f2p is very limiting once you’ve tasted what premium access feels like. however, if you’re just starting out now, there’s plenty of history and other content you can read before you feel the need or pressure to subscribe.

Swtor’s real-life in-game currency, called Cartel Coins, can also be purchased directly on Steam. the price of cartel coin packs is exactly the same as on swtor.com.

  • pack of 250 cartel coins – €2.40
  • pack of 450 cartel coins – €4.00
  • pack of 1060 cartel coins – €8.00
  • 2400 coin pack coin pack – €17.00
  • 5500 poster coin pack – €35.00

Poster Coins can be used to purchase premium decorations, outfits, and other items that alter the appearance of your characters in the in-game store – the Poster Market.

Please note that prices may differ slightly depending on your local currency.

original swtor vs steam swtor

if you have been playing the game until now, you have two options: continue using the original client or install the game again from steam.

To play swtor on steam, you first need a steam account and a swtor account. then you need to install swtor on steam. even if you have the game installed, in order to play it on steam you will need to have a fresh install separately.

You have two options here, again: install swtor on steam the normal way, which may take longer, or trick the steam installer by copying and pasting files to save download time.

The second method only works if you already have the original version of the game installed, of course. let’s take a closer look at both processes.

I installed swtor from scratch using the first method (the normal one). I didn’t remove the old client when installing the new one. all my personal preferences in the game carried over. all my shortcuts, my user interface, my graphics, sound and other settings – everything is as I left it.

You don’t need to remove the old client to install the new one, but you can’t run both launchers at the same time, of course.

how to install and play swtor on steam

once you install swtor on steam, your steam and swtor accounts will connect automatically. If for any reason you want to terminate that connection, such an option is available at swtor.com.

  1. visit swtor.com and log in with your account
  2. open https://account.swtor.com/user/steam
  3. click “unlink account ” on the right hand side
  4. your steam and swtor accounts will be unlinked.

the full game is about 43gb in size on my drive after completing a fresh install via steam. however, the next patch may change that, so don’t take this number too solid for future reference. By comparison, my original game folder is ~88gb in size, but it includes the full dots.

how to trick steam to install swtor faster

This is the second method, which is much faster, but is not officially supported. for this to work you must have swtor installed in the usual way. in other words, this method won’t work for new players.

  1. start installing swtor from steam.
  2. launch it from the steam client.
  3. as soon as it starts downloading the game files, close the launcher.
  4. Copy the following files and folders from the previous game installation folder to the steam swtor folder:- assets (folder)- movies (folder)- assets_swtor_en_us.version- assets_swtor_main.version- assets_swtor_test_main.version- movies_en_us.version

The default path of your steam games library and swtor games folder is: c:program files (86)steamsteamappscommonstar wars – the old republic.

If you don’t have the non-bitraider version of your original swtor installation, you may not have all of the files listed above. in this case, the steam client will download them anyway.

Your character’s keybindings may not carry over. if that happens, go to [user]appdatalocalswtorswtorsettingskeybindings and copy the .xml file. put it in the steam folder in the same location and start the game. the same goes for ui files.

special thanks to my friend manfred and his guilds for confirming that this method works. Please note that it may not work for you. please do this at your own risk. if something goes wrong, you don’t need to worry about your characters and game progression.

I would like to remind you once again that this is not the official way to install the game on steam.

Either way, you will still have two installation folders: one for the original client and one for the steam version. Following the steps listed above will only shorten the time it takes to finish the download process.

swtor steam requirements

if you are new to swtor, you may want to check the minimum system requirements of the game for pc. they’re not impressive at all.

  • os: windows 7 or later
  • processor: amd athlon 64 x2 dual-core 4000+ or higher/intel core 2
  • duo 2.0ghz or higher
  • memory: 3gb ram
  • graphics: intel hd 3000 or higher/amd radeon hd 7450/nvidia geforce 610
  • storage: 50gb available space

It’s been a while since I’ve tried the game on a low-end machine, but due to the poor and old game engine, frequent frame drops and visual lag, stuttering and other bugs may occur from time to time . the fps issue is most noticeable in group content: ops and warzones.

Please note that these are the minimum PC hardware requirements officially included in steam. I have a decent powerful machine and even it often has problems with group content.

benefits of playing swtor on steam

The obvious one is convenience. if you like steam and play other games on it, if you communicate with your friends using that platform, or if you just want to show off some cool swtor-related fluff on steam, make the switch!

I have a full breakdown of all steam rewards below, taken from the official announcement.

your progress is cross saved

yes. your account data, all your progress and achievements in swtor are saved and maintained by bioware.

It doesn’t matter if you continue to play swtor through its original client or choose to install it from steam: all your progress, all your characters and items you’ve earned or purchased, all unlocks… it all carries over.

The same is true in reverse: if you decide to stop playing swtor on steam and go back to the original launcher, your progress from steam will be saved and nothing will be lost no matter how often you switch platforms.

steam exclusive swtor rewards

The game is released on steam and offers steam specific benefits. Those aren’t in-game items, but traditional trading cards, emoticons, and steam backgrounds.

These are all the items you can use to spice up your steam adventure. they have no real value or effect on the game.

collectible cards

many steam titles offer this feature. unique and attractive virtual trading cards are also available on swtor on steam.

can be turned into badges that grant great steam-related rewards.

There are eight trading cards available at the start. all are based on iconic characters from swtor’s rich history spanning over a decade.

Collect a set of cards to earn items (such as emotes and backgrounds) that you can use to customize your steam account and profile.

trading cards, along with emotes and backgrounds, can also be bought and sold on the steam market.

trading cards can be obtained through steam purchases and by playing or visiting the steam market.

when you get a full set of steam cards, you can exchange them all for a badge and level up. this is what my tier 1 exterior badge looked like and the awards i received:

emoticons

emoticons are small symbols or images that are given to a user once they have created a badge.

On steam, there are some basic emotes that everyone can use, but most are only available if you own the emote.

for swtor, there will be five jawa-themed emotes available to collect at first (possibly later). To see what game-based steam emotes you have, you can check your steam inventory page.

steam backgrounds

steam profile backgrounds can also be obtained by completing a steam swtor badge.

These are displayed on your steam profile page and add an extra level of personalization to your steam presence.

There are a total of six unique backgrounds available to collect.

If you have earned multiple funds, you can change them at your discretion.

swtor steam achievements

At the time of release, the steam version of swtor does not yet have steam specific achievements available. these will be added in late summer with the 6.1.3 game update.

all steam achievements will be exact copies of their swtor counterparts, meaning no steam exclusive or unique achievements.

Achievements will be retroactive! for example, if you already have 23 achievements unlocked in the game, those same achievements will all unlock on steam when you launch swtor through the platform for the first time.

update: bioware released the full list of all swtor achievements. all 191 of them! take a look to see if you are missing any. some of them are pretty simple and most of them are related to class stories you’re going through or have probably already gone through anyway.

check out swtor’s 2020 roadmap for all the details on what’s coming and when.

swtor steam packs

Currently there are five cosmetic packs available combined in sith and jedi themes and the fifth is an entertainment pack.

Each faction gets a regular pack and a deluxe edition. the deluxe edition contains all the items from the standard edition and more.

Items in these packs are not exclusive to steam. you can find them in the cartel market available for direct purchase or get them as a random reward from cartel packs.

here are the packages and their prices:

  • swtor jedi pack – 24.99 €
  • swtor deluxe jedi pack – 59.99 €
  • swtor sith pack – 24.99 €
  • swtor deluxe sith package – €59.99
  • swtor galactic leisure package – €4.99

see my detailed review of the jedi and sith swtor packs to see the full contents of these packs and determine if they are worth purchasing.

and don’t forget to check out the galactic leisure swtor steam pack too for a different set of cosmetics that will try to entertain you and those around you.

Currently there is no information on how long they will be available on steam as a bundle and when they might disappear.

I hope you found this introductory guide helpful on how to play swtor on steam and if you switch to or continue playing on the original client.
