    Hello, fellow VR addicts. For a long time, I have been experimenting with the Bluetooth features of the Oculus Quest 2. Right now, the feature is listed as Experimental, which means it is not ready yet. Unfortunately, when trying to connect the headset to the oculus quest 2 via bluetooth, the experience is unplayable.

    Basically, the latency between the in-game action and the sound effects playing through your headset is so bad that it’s not worth playing that way. when I searched for solutions online I couldn’t really find any so I decided to experiment and find a solution myself! in this article i’ll show you how to connect your bluetooth headset to the oculus quest 2 and get a clear connection with virtually no latency (noticeable latency anyway, i’m not an audiophile so i can’t measure this until now). millisecond).

    While doing some research on my own, I noticed a lot of redditors reporting the same thing. this thread has some users reporting audio latency issues.

    one of the most likely reasons is that the oculus quest and quest 2 controllers depend on a bluetooth connection with the headset to work. so since there are already 2 devices paired with the earphones, adding bluetooth earphones is not so viable as there is not much space left in the “bluetooth bandwidth”. this was a theory reported in this reddit thread.

    Now that we know some of the possible reasons that cause latency, how can we avoid this and connect bluetooth headset to oculus quest 2 and eliminate latency? the answer lies in a $15 – $30 device known as a bluetooth audio transceiver.

    so here is the setup i have, where this method works great. just to be clear, this method works only with native fetch games and pcvr setups as well. i tested it both in native fetch games and games via steam vr and virtual desktop.

    four steps to connect oculus quest bluetooth headset:

    step 1: buy a bluetooth transmitter or transceiver

    These devices are relatively inexpensive and shouldn’t cost you more than $15 to $30. this device acts as a bridge between your oculus quest and your bluetooth headset, bypassing the headset’s bluetooth function, which is not yet effective enough.

    be sure to read the reviews and find the best value for your money. the most important thing to keep in mind is make sure you buy a bluetooth 5.0 model and not an older device with lower power.

    Also, be sure to find one with an audio cable short enough to get out of the way. You’ll stick the transceiver on top of the oculus quest and plug it into the quest headphone jack.

    Ideally, the rope should be approximately 18 to 20 cm or 7 to 8 inches long.

    I chose a bluetooth 5.0 transceiver from soundpeats which cost me about $27 on amazon japan. you should be able to find something similar or even cheaper when looking for transceivers at your local online or local stores.

    To connect the transceiver to the top of the oculus quest, first plug the transceiver into the quest headset jack. this will help you gauge the best position at the top of the mission.

    step 3: pair your bluetooth headset with the transceiver

    if you chose the transceiver (and not just a transmitter), first make sure your transceiver is set to transmit mode (we are transmitting the mission audio to the headset).

    once this is done, turn on the transceiver and turn on your headphones. follow the pairing guide for your headset and transceiver to pair the devices.

    step 4 (for pcvr gamers only): experiment with connecting the transceiver to your pc’s audio jack or to the oculus quest’s audio jack

    When trying this method for pcvr gaming, you have the additional option of plugging the transceiver into your computer’s audio jack.

    My computer has a sound blaster z sound card, and to take advantage of that, I connected my transceiver to my computer and ran the audio through the computer.

    To do this, I set the oculus quest volume to 0 so that virtual desktop audio doesn’t come through my headset while I’m gaming.

    then in pc audio settings, do not choose virtual desktop audio. choose the playback device associated with the audio jack you plugged the transceiver into.


    if you want to avoid that hassle. just follow step 3 and choose “virtual desktop audio” as your playback device in your pc’s sound settings.

    I tried this method on the following games via pcvr:

    • skyrim
    • pavlov vr
    • sword reverie

    The results also depended on the quality of the headphones. as I said before, I tried the following headphones:

    • anker soundcore life q10
    • fospower wireless bluetooth sport headphones
    • noname bluetooth headphones

    I specifically chose cheaper headset options because I’m on a mission to make VR as cheap and easy to use as possible. I’m not a fan of $1000+ vr devices or $1000+ gpus. I’m looking for options that normal people can afford.

    all of these headphones can be purchased for less than $40.

    trying the no-name bluetooth headset from

    starting from the bottom. I bought some knockoff headphones/airpods on that cost me less than $20 including shipping.

    I liked this design because they are the most comfortable and allow you to move freely. even with the boxing games, they didn’t fall off. the same cannot be said for regular over-the-ear headphones. if you shake your head hard enough during a hard VR boxing match, there’s a chance they’ll slide.

    Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. I did notice a decent amount of latency with these. maybe their bluetooth signal was not very strong because they were made with cheap parts. I wouldn’t recommend going the ultra cheap route with earphones from wish.

    results: noticeable latency

    pros: more comfortable, great for active gaming, very cheap

    cons: latency is particularly noticeable in rhythm-based games

    fospower earphones have many things going for them. they were relatively cheap, lightweight, and sweat resistant. That may not matter to most of you, but I sweat uncontrollably during VR.

    The sweat resistance with the headphones is a big draw for me.

    There is a short cable connecting the two earphones, but it’s small and rests on the back of your neck, barely noticeable.

    When I tried them, at least during my games, I did not experience any latency with skyrim vr. however, for some reason during skyrim vr sometimes the audio would randomly cut out. I don’t know what caused this. It didn’t happen all the time, but it did happen twice in about an hour of play, so I thought it was important to point that out.

    If you play rhythm games, random audio cutting can be a deal breaker for you. however, for sports gaming, these are the best headsets on this list.

    Also, compared to over-the-ear headphones, the audio quality is obviously inferior. These are inexpensive headphones made to be worn during physical activities. they’re great for boxing games, but if you want crisp, clear, immersive audio, nothing beats an over-the-ear headset.

    results: no latency, but weird audio glitches a couple of times

    pros: comfortable, best for active gaming, sweat resistant, cheap price

    disadvantages: the audio quality is average

    These budget headphones are only $40 and they’re way better than I thought they’d be. it just shows how far our technology has come, as we can offer such quality for only $40.

    Of the 3 on this list, this headset had the best audio quality and literally 0 latency when tested in skyrim vr and pavlov. but then again, I’m not an audiophile so don’t don’t try this until the tenths of a millisecond.

    All I can say is that as someone who plays skyrim vr religiously, I noticed better audio quality than what comes out of the quest 2 headset and 0 latency throughout my gaming sessions.

    anker also claims that these earphones have up to 60 hours of battery life and charge fast: charge for 5 minutes, listen for 5 hours.

    results: absolutely no latency

    pros: comfortable, best audio quality

    cons: the bulkiest option on this list

    If you can’t stand the audio quality that the quest headset provides, you can definitely connect bluetooth headphones or earphones to the oculus quest.

    However, you cannot use the built-in experimental Bluetooth feature that Quest 2 offers. You must use an external Bluetooth transceiver and pair your headset with the transceiver, which you connect to either the Quest itself or your PCVR gaming PC.
