Accessing a public wi-fi network, a mobile hotspot or even a hotel wi-fi connection is very easy when connected through a traditional web browser or a pc, but connecting through of a gaming system can be a “you know what” annoyance. “. many hotels are guilty of having a weak wi-fi signal, but even the good ones have complexity due to ip address protection and other security protocols required to run a secure hotel wi-fi network.
More and more guests are traveling with their game console, and for reception managers, these consoles can cause a lot of headaches. Setting up a PS4, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox on a new Wi-Fi network, especially one that is password protected, is never as easy as it seems. But given the popularity of gaming consoles among Gen Z and Millennial travelers, it’s a process your team will need to master to meet guest expectations.

You’ve probably read the reddit and gamespot threads on the subject, but they can be a pain to peruse, so we’ve compiled all the best information into one clear article.
this guide will cover connecting a nintendo switch to hotel wifi (or, if that fails, an alternate internet connection). The Nintendo Switch reportedly sold more than twice as many consoles in March 2020 in the US than it did in March 2019, due in part to the popularity of the Animal Crossing game. See the end of this guide for more information on animal crossing, as well as recommendations for games. To learn how to set up other consoles, check out our guides for PS4 and Xbox.
what do you need to connect your switch?
If you are not familiar with the Nintendo Switch, please watch this video to see how to set up a Switch console for the first time. Make sure your guest has all the components before trying to connect to your hotel Wi-Fi.
Most players know to travel with these items, but be sure to double check them before you begin. you will need:
wifi username and password
If you don’t have a team, you should be able to contact the front desk via one of these preferred methods at your hotel to request one, as many hotels have gaming equipment on property:
mobile ordering software
application for hotels
tablets for guest rooms
messaging software for guests
steps to connect to hotel wifi on a switch
If you had a contactless check-in process at the hotel, you may not have had a chance to ask the front desk about connecting your device to the in-room entertainment system and Wi-Fi. the process to connect a nintendo switch to wifi is a bit complicated. here’s a video you can use to help visualize the steps as you relate them to your guest:
Try following these steps:
1. switch to “settings” in the main menu
2. in settings, in the menu on the left, select “internet” and go to “internet settings”
3. the switch will start searching for a network.
4. your hotel network should appear. click on the network for the switch to begin the registration process.
5. the network requires a password and will ask you to register. press “next”
6. a browser window will open where the guest can submit login details.
7. the wifi will connect once the guest sends the password.
nintendo wifi troubleshooting
some guests on reddit and youtube report having trouble connecting to the login page (the step after pressing next to register). a hotel front desk manager noted that the hotel’s connections are slower. the solution he used was to set the switch not to sleep and leave it trying to connect: “after some time, the login window appears. tried it myself and it works, it keeps trying to connect for 15-20 minutes but at the end the window pops up so you can use your hotel login credentials or whatever.”
If your guest is still having trouble connecting, try one of these options.
connect through a different browser page
Sometimes when the switch gets stuck trying to load the signup/login page, it may prompt the page to load by trying to access a different website. for example, if you try to access facebook, the hotel wifi will redirect you to login. once you’ve logged in, you’ll be connected to the internet and able to play. here’s how to trigger a redirect to the login page.
tell your guest to go to user settings and then to social media settings. this will take you to a browser. it is very likely that your hotel’s security system redirects the guest to the login page. from there, proceed as normal.
connect via laptop
a user on reddit managed to connect to wifi through his laptop. this is what they did:
connect to wifi on laptop
create an ad hoc network on your laptop
connect to the newly created ad hoc network on your switch
enjoy your change with full internet access… albeit a bit slower due to multiple connections.
do not turn off or close your laptop
use a third-party access point
The Connectify Hotspot software application gives you a way to access Wi-Fi through a Windows laptop. This is not an ideal setup, as a guest must have the laptop and connect already installed. but connectify is free and works with nintendo switch. See this guide for more information on using connectify with switch.
