Linksys Official Support – Setting up the range extender through a wired connection

linksys range extenders can be configured via a wired connection in addition to using the setup cd that comes with the device. To configure the range extender manually, follow the steps below:

  • verify the wi-fi settings on the wireless router or access point
  • connect the computer to the range extender
  • set up the linksys wireless range extender

The wi-fi settings of the linksys wireless range extender and the wireless router or access point must match for them to work properly. you must first identify the following:

  • wifi name
  • wifi channel
  • wifi security mode (wpa® / wpa2® personal or wep)
  • password or wifi passphrase

connect the computer to the range extender

Using an ethernet cable, connect the extender to the computer. this will allow you to access your web-based setup page.

note: images may vary depending on the type of computer you are using. in this example, a laptop is used.

To configure your extender’s wireless settings, follow the steps below:

Quick Tip: For optimal performance, it is recommended to use the wireless-n range extender with a wireless-n router.

Step 1:Start your web browser.

Step 2:Enter “192.168.1.1” in the address bar.

note: If the extender is not already configured, it will automatically redirect to the web-based setup page if you try to access any website.

step 3: leave the username blank and enter “admin” in the password field. note: the linksys re1000 is used here as an example.

step 4: click wireless > basic wireless setup.

step 5: in the settings view section, click the manual radio button and then enter the wi -fi or network name (ssid) in the provided field.

Step 6: In the Wireless Security section, select the security mode your router uses.

Step 7:After selecting the security mode, enter the passphraseor wi-fi passwordused by your router in the fields provided.

step 8:click save settings.
