How to Bi-Wire and Bi-Amp Stereo Speakers – Full Connection Instructions

Do I have to bi-amp or bi-wire my speaker connections?

some of our models have speaker wire connections to allow bi-amping or wiring.

This is for your benefit and can be used to improve the performance of your system. connecting a basic audio system where there is only one connection from the amplifier is very simple and there is no need to bi-amp or bi-wire.

you can connect your speakers using the regular left and right speaker cable connections and ignore the second set of terminals.

As we ship these speakers, there are gold plated jumpers connecting the two sets of terminals allowing the speaker to be wired like a traditional speaker.

Only remove these jumpers if you plan to bi-wire or bi-amp your speakers.

How do I use bi-wired connections to increase the performance of my system?

The two-wire connection separates the woofer from the combined tweeter and midrange section. A two-wire compatible speaker has 4 connection terminals. these two sets of terminals allow the speaker to be divided into two independent sections.

The split connects the mid and high frequency drivers to one set of terminals and the low frequency driver to the other pair. As we ship these speakers there are gold plated jumpers connecting the two sets of terminals allowing the speaker to be wired like a traditional speaker.

In the two-wire speaker connection, the jumpers are removed and separate sets of speaker wires are run from the amplifier to each section, as shown below.

These are the steps to connect the speakers in two-wire mode:

  • make sure your system is powered off.
  • remove the jumpers from two wires on each speaker (this separates the lpf and hpf crossovers).
  • connect them to the amplifier to its respective speaker section, as shown.

When connecting the speaker cable, be careful to maintain the correct polarity (+ or red) to (+ or red) and (- or black) to (- or black). Before attempting to connect, make sure your amplifier’s speaker cable connectors accept a second set of cables and that the power is turned off while you make the connections.

How do I use bi-amp connections to increase the performance of my system?

For anyone willing to go to the trouble, the sonic rewards are exceptional in a bi-amp system. there will be many obvious improvements in sound, everything will be clearer and tighter. bi-amping is the use of two amplifiers for both speakers.

One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of one speaker, while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement, each amplifier operates in a restricted frequency range.

This restricted range presents each amp with a much simpler job and it is less likely that each amp will “influence” the sound in some way. The speaker’s internal crossover filter consists of an LPF (Low Pass Filter) and an HPF (High Pass Filter). As its name implies, the LPF passes frequencies below a cutoff and rejects frequencies above the cutoff frequency. also, the hpf passes frequencies above its cutoff.

These are the steps to connect speakers in bi-amp mode:

  • make sure your system is powered off.
  • remove the jumpers from two wires on each speaker (this separates the lpf and hpf crossovers).
  • connect them to the amplifier to its respective speaker section, as shown.
  • Set the level controls on the amplifiers so that the signal reaches all speaker terminals with the same power level and volume. if your amps are identical, setting all amp level controls the same is usually sufficient. The speaker’s built-in crossover is designed to match the efficiency of all the individual drivers (tweeters, midranges, and woofers). When using the bi-amp connection, you need to directly address some of these issues by adjusting the levels according to your listening preferences.

Above, we show our preferred setup using a stereo amplifier for each frequency range. if your amps are not identical, use the loudest amp for the low sections and the cleanest (better sounding) amp for the high sections.
