How to Install a Washing Machine
If your laundry room is set up with the right plumbing, installing a new washing machine is a snap. just follow the instructions given here.
Replacing an old washer with a new one is an easy task, as described below. Basically, it implies:
- confirm plumbing is ready.
- measure entrance and plan washer location.
- move washer into room with helper.
- level the washer, if necessary, by turning the front feet up or down.
- connect the washer’s water supply hoses to the hot and cold water valves.
- put the discharge hose into the drain standpipe.
- plug in the washing machine.
Before you buy a new washing machine, make sure it goes through the doors you must go through on your way to the laundry area. As discussed in the article, buy the best washer, some washers are up to 30 inches wide.
Have a helper and appliance dolly handy to move the washing machine, it will be heavy! notice in the photo how professional deliverymen use specially designed heavy-duty straps to make it easier to transport a washing machine where a hand truck cannot easily be used.
Load the washer on the hand cart on its side so its narrowest dimension fits through doorways.
If you are installing a washing machine in a new location, you will need to run hot and cold water supply pipes to the point of connection and terminate each with a shut-off valve and possibly a water hammer absorber to prevent the pipes from bump when the washer fill cycle starts.
if there is already a sink, you can hook the washer drain hose over the edge of the sink.
Otherwise, the washer will need to drain into a standpipe, a 2-inch diameter pipe with a built-in trap that connects to the nearest drainpipe.
the top of the standpipe should be 18-30 inches above the trap (some codes allow up to 42 inches). the trap should be between 6 and 18 inches above the ground.
Standpipes are available with integrated traps or can be assembled using standard drain pipe and elbow fittings.
A single-lever valve is an alternative to conventional washing machine shutoff valves.
With this type, you simply turn the lever to turn off the water supply. Since the hoses connecting a washing machine can leak or burst, this is a good way to avoid an unexpected flood when you’re not home. (just be sure to open the valve before running the washer).
how to connect a washing machine
here is a short and simple video on how to hook up a washing machine. however, here are a couple of caveats about the methods it uses. First, don’t apply “plumber’s tape” to the threads and don’t overtighten the hose connections to the washing machine. the hoses should seal easily due to the rubber grommets inside the connectors. turn on the water and check for leaks before putting the washer back in place.
1 Screw the washer’s water supply hoses to the connections on the back of the washer. If the hoses are marked, be sure to note which one will go to the hot water valve and which one will go to the cold water valve. don’t overtighten.
2 connect the washer supply hoses to the proper valves (again, make sure you connect to the correct valves). put the appliance in place. level the top of the machine, adjusting the front feet as needed.
3 Put the drain hose into the standpipe (or sink). open the water supply valves and check for leaks.
